To win lumps of money at poker,
study and practice the 7 basic tactics of poker. These are easy to study
but you will need to practice daily to
be successful and to win most of your poker games.
1. Soak up all the rules of the game
Research and learn all the rules of the specific game you wish to play
so that when arguing against opponents, you will be able to safeguard
your cash. Note that even a single incorrect decision against you might
break your game. Looking up and comparing the rules of the poker game
you are playing prevents other players from outsmarting you out of your
money.
2. Carefully view the poker game before you enter.
If you happen in on a poker game being played by unfamiliar gamblers or
if you are playing online poker, carefully view the game for about thirty
minutes. Scrutinize other player’s tactics and their art of playing.
Some will play loosely, others tightly and a few will tend to fold frequently.
Use these as guides when you ultimately join the game.
At first, play according to the lowest allowed limit. In the chance you
receive a very strong hand immediately after you begin, don’t exaggerate
your bets. It could be a trick. Poker games are sometimes crooked! Beware
or you will lose it all. Initially, be content with winning small. If your
opponents are cheating you won’t lose too much and will be able to
leave. Likewise, they might realize that you are too clever to fall for
their cunning tactics and leave you alone.
3. Enter poker games with sufficient money
Verify the game’s set limitations (the lower and the higher). In
addition, verify if any other limitations apply to the particular game.
There could be additional limitations like betting limits, raising limits
or pot limits.
Don’t commence if you lack the money to last a few rounds as per
the game’s limit. You will most probably lose it all. You should
have a much larger cash roll than is required. Thus you will be able to
raise or match bets when your cards are high enough. How would you feel
if had a royal flush, but lacked the money to exploit it?
No matter how skillful you are, note that you will lose quite a number
of rounds. Would you wish to be forced to have to leave the game before
you get a chance to overcome your unlucky streak? I recommend at least
$20 for a 50¢ limit or $40 for a $1 limit.
4. Pay attention to the skill of your fellow poker players
Before playing against other players, try and determine how skilled they
are. This is particularly important if you are a poker novice. If your
opponents are experienced poker players; please beware. Not even talent
(except sheer luck) matches experience. Sure, if your luck holds out,
you will win a few bucks. But if the opposite turns out to be true, you
will lose a lot of money. Try and locate a game where players possess
equally novice skills or are as skilled as you.
5. Observing the poker pot
Stand firm, don’t step down and allow any player to place an amount
lower than what was agreed on into the poker pot. Many card sharks use
this tactic saying that they will add it later and then conveniently ‘forget’ about
it. Doing this they save a tiny amount of money every session. Note that
these small amounts eventually add up to quite a large sum after a few
rounds of poker so don’t allow others to skim off the top while you
play honestly.
6. Don’t lend or borrow tokens or money
Ages ago, William Shakespeare gave sound advice, “Neither a lender
nor a borrower be.” Abide and listen to it. Don’t lend cash to
other poker players; the likelihood that you will be paid back is marginal.
In addition, this will often drain your resources and cause you to stop playing
poker because your money will run out. Remember there are no friends in poker
just opponents wishing to take away your money. 7. Work on improving your skill
Drill! Drill! Drill!
Nothing substitutes practical expertise. Playing poker improves your game.
But remember not to take part in a high limit poker game during this learning
period.
Skill at poker depends on five elements:
a. Betting daringly
b. Managing your money successfully
c. Knowing the odds and mathematics of poker
d. Knowing how to use psychological deception
e. Being able to memorize and analyze cards
